Valentine’s Day Craft Ideas - The Good Play Guide (2024)

Valentine’s Day Craft Ideas

Valentine’s Day craft activities for kids provide more than just fun; they offer valuable developmental benefits.

Under parental guidance, children can explore their creativity and fine motor skills through cutting, pasting, and painting. These activities also promote cognitive growth as kids follow instructions and problem-solve. Crafting fosters emotional development by allowing children to express their affection for others through personalized creations.

Moreover, it strengthens familial bonds and creates lasting memories. By engaging in Valentine’s Day crafts, parents and children can enjoy quality time together while instilling important values of kindness and thoughtfulness.

So, this Valentine’s Day, seize the opportunity to celebrate love through crafting with your little ones, nurturing their minds and hearts in the process.

Handprint Valentine Card

This will make a perfect Valentine’s present for someone special!

What you’ll need

  • Coloured Card/Paper
  • Paint
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pen
  1. Create handprints by painting your child’s hand and pressing it down onto some paper or card. Do this twice to give two separate handprints. Wait for the paint to dry.
  2. Cut around both handprints.
  3. Take a piece of card and fold it in half. On the front of the card stick both handprints in a ‘V’ shape so they resemble a heart.
  4. You could add a sweet message on the front, e.g. ‘Hands-down you’re the best Valentine!”

Tissue paper flowers

You can use pipe cleaners and tissue paper to create beautiful flowers as a gift.

What you’ll need:

  • Tissue paper cut into circles
  • Beads
  • Pipe cleaners
  1. Insert the end of a pipe cleaner through the centres of 2 or 3 tissue paper circles.
  2. Thread a bead onto the end of the pipe cleaner.
  3. Insert the pipe cleaner end back through the tissue paper and secure everything in place by twisting it.
  4. Individually crumple each tissue paper circle to achieve a textured effect.
  5. Add more flowers in different colours to create a bouquet.

Valentine’s Day Wreath

A Valentine-themed wreath is a perfect decoration to display at home for this special day.

What you’ll need:

  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Embellishments to decorate (coloured hearts cut from paper, sequins, ribbons, stickers etc.)
  • Ribbon or string for hanging
  1. Cut the middle out of paper plates to create a ring. If you stick two rings together the wreath will be sturdier.
  2. Allow children to choose materials to decorate their wreaths with. Choose from heart cut-outs, sequins, stickers, and ribbons.
  3. Punch a hole in the top of the wreath and loop through some ribbon or string to hang from a door.

Love Monsters

This Love Monster craft is a delightful and imaginative way for kids to express creativity while celebrating the theme of love.

What you’ll need:

  • Coloured card
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pens or crayons
  • Optional: pipe cleaners, pom-poms, and other embellishments.
  1. Cut out a heart shape from the coloured card, this will be the monster’s body.
  2. Cut out two smaller heart shapes to be the monster’s feet.
  3. Glue the feet to the bottom of the heart.
  4. Add googly eyes towards the top of the heart – feel free to add as many as you like!
  5. Use pens or crayons to draw the monster’s mouth and nose.
  6. Use embellishments such as sequins or pom-poms to decorate the Love Monster.
  7. Don’t forget to give your monster a name!

Heart-shaped Stained Glass

A perfect window decoration for this time of year!

What you’ll need:

  • Coloured tissue paper
  • Coloured card
  • Contact paper / sticky back plastic
  • Scissors
  1. Cut your coloured tissue paper into small squares (½ to 1 inch).
  2. Fold a piece of coloured card in half and cut out a large heart.
  3. While the heart is still folded, make a parallel cut about 1 inch inside the heart. This will give you a heart window frame. Save the cut-out from the inside to use in other crafts!
  4. Open the heart frame and stick it down onto the contact paper.
  5. Place the tissue squares inside the heart on the contact paper, staying inside the frame.
  6. Once you’ve covered the whole heart, take a second piece of contact paper and place it over the tissue, covering the whole frame. Be careful to avoid air bubbles.
  7. Cut away the excess contact paper to leave a heart shape.
  8. You can punch a hole in the top of the hearts to hang them, or use tape to stick them to a window (this will give the best effect!)

Valentine’s Day Rock Painting

These cute little rocks make a great gift or can be used as garden decorations.

What you’ll need:

  • Smooth rocks (clean and dry)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes and palette
  • Markers or paint pens (optional)
  • Sealer
  1. Choose a colour to use as a base coat for your design (a solid colour or a combination). Leave to dry completely.
  2. Once the base coat is dry, use different colours to create Valentine’s Day-themed designs on the rocks. Ideas include hearts, love messages, flowers, or even cute animals associated with love.
  3. Use markers or paint pens to add intricate patterns, outlines, or personalised messages to the painted rocks for finer details. Allow rocks to dry completely.
  4. To protect the paint and enhance the colours, you can apply a clear sealer. This step is optional but can help the rocks withstand weather if placed outdoors.

Valentine’s Day crafts serve as a delightful avenue for children to express affection, hone skills, and deepen connections, all under the guidance of their parents.

These creative endeavours not only nurture development but also cultivate cherished moments and reinforce the essence of love within families. Embracing these activities not only adds a touch of joy to the occasion but also underscores the significance of shared experiences and meaningful gestures.

This Valentine’s Day, let’s seize the opportunity to embark on crafting adventures with our little ones, fostering growth and fostering bonds that last a lifetime.
