Recipes Based on TV Shows (2)

Have you ever watched a movie or a TV show drooling over the food or drinks the characters gorged on? For example, the cherry pie in Twin Peaks, mimosas in Orphan Black or the takeout meals in The Big Bang Theory? Next time you (re)watch the show, you can have your own snacks or drinks similar to the ones on screen.

1. Twin Peaks Cherry Pie

Work without coffee and doughnuts is impossible for Special Agent Dale Cooper. And cherry pie is a special treat he will never miss. The best pie in Twin Peaks is baked by Norma Jennings and served up at the Double R Diner. Together with coffee, it is “Damn good food. Diane, if you ever get up this way that cherry pie is worth a stop.” In anticipation of each new episode of the third season of the show, you can make your own cherry pie.

Preparation Time: One hour
Cooking Time: About one hour

Ingredients

For the cherry filling:

1.5 kg (3.3lb) sweet cherries

150g (5.3oz) castor sugar

1 tbsp granulated sugar

1½ tbsp cornflour

3 tbsp water

For the pastry:

450g (1lb) plain flour

50g (1.8oz) ground almonds

100g (3.5oz) icing sugar

250g (1¼ sticks) unsalted butter

5 tbsp water

1 large egg

½ tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of sea salt

Butter for greasing

For glazing:

1 egg yolk

1 tablespoon water

Instructions:

Combine the flour, icing sugar, ground almonds, salt and butter in a large bowl. Mix until the mixture looks crumbly (or use a food processor).

Beat the egg with water and the vanilla extract. Use a fork to stir it into the flour. Mix it into a firm dough. Divide the dough in half, then flatten each half, wrap it in cling film and cool in the fridge for 30-60 minutes.

Pit the cherries. Put the cherries and sugar into a saucepan and heat for about 5-10 minutes until the cherries start to break down a bit. Whisk together the cornflour and water and stir into the cherries. Bring to the boil, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens. Leave to cool.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Roll out one pastry portion and then place it over the base and sides of a greased tart tin. Remove the excess pastry. Fill the tin with the cherry mixture. Brush the top of the pie edge with a little of the egg glaze.

Roll out the other pastry portion thinly and cut into long zig-zag shapes. Place them on top of the pie. Brush the decoration with some of the egg glaze and sprinkle with the granulated sugar.

Bake for about 20 minutes until the crust is golden. Reduce the temperature to 180°C (350°F), and bake for another 35–40 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice-cream or at a room temperature.

2. Orphan Black Mimosas

A mimosa is a cocktail used in Orphan Black as an antidote to every one of the problems or difficult situations in which the women belonging to the 'clone club' or their families find themselves. Especially Felix is the one who drinks mimosas by the bucket. Evidently, this cocktail soothes and calms. For instance, in this scene:

[Mrs. S walks into Felix's loft to talk to Sarah]
Mrs. S: And you're alive.
Sarah: Yeah. Why?
Mrs. S: Two homicide detectives on my doorstep this morning, quite convinced they'd found your body in a gravel quarry.
Felix: Who wants mimosas?
Mrs. S: Sit down and shut your gob! I was tempted to claim the remains and feed them to you both on toast.

3. Fringe Blueberry Pancakes

The brilliant and wonderfully eccentric scientist of Fringe, Walter Bishop, is obsessed with food, probably because of the 17-year stay in a mental institution where he had to do without his favourite foods. He rediscovers the tastes and flavours once he leaves the hospital. He loves ginger ale, strawberry milkshake (he perfects a recipe in his lab), coffee cake, blue cotton candy, root beer float (he shows Olivia how to properly drink it), cheesesteak, fresh milk from his cow Gene, and blueberry pancakes. On Facebook he has allegedly left the recipe for the pancakes which he used to prepare for Peter when he was a child, and which he prepares in season 3 for a special breakfast hoping that it will help Peter and Olivia to become a couple.

"My Bishop Family Recipe for Blueberry Pancakes!

BLUEBERRY BUCKWHEAT PANCAKES

A hearty ENERGIZING breakfast food to start your long day of experimenting!!!

  • 1/2 cup buckwheat flour
  • 1/2 all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp sugar (more if you like your pancakes on the sweet side, or if your berries are super tart)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 stick cold, unsalted butter (1/4 cup) cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk (you can fake the buttermilk but adding 1 tsp lemon juice to 1 cup milk)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp grated lemon zest
  • 2 cups blueberries
  • oil or butter for the pan

Mix the flours, baking powder, sugar, and salt, either in a bowl or in the bowl of a food processor and cut the butter into the mix—by pulsing the food processor or by using a pastry cutter or knife and fork—until the mixture resembles fine meal!

In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk and the eggs until smooth. Add the dry ingredient mixture and stir until incorporated. Add the lemon zest. Let sit five minutes before adding the blueberries. The batter will be thick!

Grease a fry pan or griddle and heat on medium high. Once the pan is hot enough so that a drop of water “dances” on the grease, pour the batter on in 1/2 cup scoops with a ladle. Don’t flip the pancakes until a generous amount of bubbles have appeared towards the center of the pancake. Adjust heat as NEEDED!

Garnish with some fresh blueberries and serve with your favorite maple syrup. OH! Feel free to make them in the shape of WHALES! It's what I used to do for my son Peter when he was a Young BOY!"
