In Greek myth, the Minotaur was a monster with the head of a bull and the body of a man who was imprisoned in a dark underground labyrinth at Knossos on the Aegean island of Crete.

Mythology and legends

According to Greek mythology, the first queen of Crete was Europa. Later on, Crete island became the land of King Minos. The legend is that the king refused to sacrifice a bull to the gods and Poseidon punished him by making his wife fall in love with a bull.

He is the father of Icarus, the uncle of Perdix, and possibly also the father of Iapyx. Among his most famous creations are the wooden cow for Pasiphaë, the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete which imprisoned the Minotaur, and wings that he and his son Icarus used to attempt to escape Crete.

Moral of the Icarus and Daedalus Story

It is from this story that the famous line “Don't fly too close to the sun” comes from. It means to not be too ambitious or adamant about something and to calm down and back off when necessary.

Daedalus' story is told differently in Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes. The most notable change is that he killed Perdix before Icarus was even born, the judges of Athens sentenced him to exile for this, which is why he went to Crete.

Seeking a means of escape, Daedalus creates wings from feathers and wax for himself and his son. Before taking flight, Daedalus warned Icarus of the dangers: Flying too close to the sun would melt the wax, and flying too close to the sea would wet the feathers, rendering the wings useless.

Daedalus was struck with horror but there was nothing he could do to save his son. Aggrieved at his loss, he named the sea-spot where his son had drowned and the close by island after his name. The sea was named the Icarian Sea and the island was named Ikaria.

They could not leave by ship; all vessels were controlled by King Minos. Daedalus stared up at the sky and the seagulls that circled overhead. If only he was as free as a bird. If only he and his son could just fly away … and then he had an idea which was both brilliant and ambitious.

Daedalus, momentarily stricken with jealousy, threw Talus off of the Acropolis. For this crime, Daedalus was exiled to Crete and placed in the service of King Minos, where he eventually had a son, Icarus, with the beautiful Naucrate, a mistress-slave of the King.

Icarus laughed as he fell. yelled into the winds, arms spread wide, teeth bared to the world.
