This free crochet washcloth pattern features a unique twist on a stitch you might not have encountered before – the modifed hc2tog (​​half double crochet two together).

This stitch creates a fabric with a gorgeous drape, giving us a washcloth that’s not just functional but looks great too!

Once you get the hang of the modified hdc2tog this pattern is so easy to follow. With an easy one-row repeat, you can comfortably settle down on your couch and crochet away, making it the ideal project for relaxing evenings.

And this reversible stitch pattern is not just limited to just washcloths. Once you learn it, I can almost guarantee you’ll want to use it for everything – blanket, scarves, cowls, you name it!

What you’ll need to make this washcloth

Yarn

A worsted weight cotton yarn is a great choice for your washcloth. Cotton is far and away my top pick for dishcloths and dish towels – it’s durable, easy to wash and holds color well even with lots of use.

Crochet dishcloths provide a great opportunity to work through your yarn stash. Obviously, the amount of yarn that you need will depend on the size that you are making, but in general, for a small washcloth, a single 50g skein of any cotton yarn should be plenty.

I used Drops Paris yarn for my washcloth in the fabulous “Wasabi” colorway. I absolutely love the bright green color – it really gives me all the springtime vibes!

Hook

You will need a 5.5mm I/9 crochet hook for this project (or whichever hook size allows you to crochet with an even tension). Opting for a slightly larger hook size ensures that your fabric achieves the perfect drape and softness.

Gauge is not critical for this pattern but just note that if your gauge is slightly different to mine your project may turn out a different size and you might use more/less yarn.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

• ch = chain
• st(s) = stitch(es)
• sk = skip
• sl st = slip stitch
• sc = single crochet
• sc/hdc2tog = single crochet/half double crochet 2 together (see Special Stitches)
• beg = beginning
• rem = remaining

Construction

• This project is worked in rows from the bottom up.
• The sample is pictured in a single color, but feel free to use any number of colors that you wish.

General Pattern Notes

• Ch 1 at the start of a row does not count as a stitch.
• Stitch count for each row is given in square brackets [ ] at the end of the row. Stitch count includes chains within the row, but does not include the turning ch 1 at the start of a row.
• If no stitch count is given then the count is the same as the previous row.

Any #4/Worsted/Medium weight yarn in a cotton or cotton blend. The amounts given here are for Drops Paris in Wasabi (39) (82yds/75m per 50g skein; #4/Worsted/Medium; 100% Cotton).

Finished Measurements

Washcloth: 8.25″ x 8″ / 21cm x 20.5cm

Tea Towel: 14.5″ x 22″ / 37cm x 56cm

Note: you can also add an optional single crochet border around the edge of your project which will add approx 0.5” / 1.25cm to the width and length.

Gauge

14 sts x 10 rows = 4″ x 4″ / 10 cm x 10 cm measured over sc/crossed dc.

Note: gauge is not critical for this project. However, if your gauge does not match the one listed above then your project may turn out a little larger/smaller depending on how loosely/tightly you crochet, and you may use a different amount of yarn than what is listed above.

Special Stitches

Single Crochet/Half Double Crochet 2 Together (sc/hdc2tog)

Step 1: Insert hook into indicated st, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 2: Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop. [4 loops on hook]

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

Adjustments

Stitch multiple: 2 + 1

Starting chain multiple: 2 + 2

• To adjust the width of your project, simply chain any multiple of 2 + 2 to start.
• To adjust the length, simply repeat Row 2 until you reach your desired length.

Note: adjusting the size of your project will impact the amount of yarn required.
