12sailors Neighed : baby 100 is just darling!!! 🥰 who's been your favorite little one so far? personality and/or coat wise |
My favorite one was born at the very start of the year and her name is Elle Driver. I took this video last night when I went to go visit her. Her dam is a first time momma who is food aggressive and unfortunately when Elle was 12 days old her mother kicked her in the face at feedin time. After a long time of treatment and trying to save the eye it just worsened and she was in a lot of pain so we had it removed. Despite being poked and prodded 3 times a day for a month she has never once been hateful in any way and has always been the sweetest baby.
Color wise though
This silver dapple filly who will be grey like her daddy eventually

Anonymous Neighed : What’s working in breeding like? I already work with horses but I’m considering applying for a program that’s a year long traineeship at a stud that’s combined with formal education parts so you come out with experience and formal knowledge (other side of the world so specifics won’t mean much to you) |
I’ve worked in repro for 11 years and it’s long hard work. Here, most of the breeding is through AI so the studs are collected and as we check mares throughout the day they are inseminated with the pre-collected and extended dose. Most of our studs can breed 20-30 mares a day on one collection, some have high volume that doesn’t live as long and can sometimes only breed 7.
The babies is easy if you have the right resources. We use foal alert monitors that you sew into the vulva (I can take pictures of some for yall some time) but when the foals legs come out it detaches a magnet that rings and alarm that then calls us. Most of the time the babies are halfway or all the way out by the time we arrive but dystocias (stuck babies) do happen and often babies are born dead. We’ve been lucky to only have one out of 100 born dead this spring and a handful of dystocias. It’s a rewarding field but it takes a lot of time and a lot of commitment.
