Detachment Programs
Home Away from Home
The Down East Detachment has donated more than $70,000 in hotel lodging for active duty families with babies in the neo-natal unit at Vidant Medical Center. We also provide lodging for family members with an injured or ill active duty family member in the hospital at Vidant.
How it works We are contacted by staff at Vidant Medical Center when lodging at the Ronald McDonald is not available. We coordinate with Candlewood Suites to provide a comfortable bed for families. That's it, simple, effective.
100% of donations to the Home Fund are used for the program. We have no administrative costs and all members volunteer their time to support the program.
A special thanks to PotashCorp for their continued and generous support for the Home Away from Home Program.
A Few Good Books
The Detachment has donated tens of thousands of books to the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital at Vidant Medical Center.
Toys for Tots
The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.
